For the Month of Ches
Calendar/Holidays -( So you can find your birthday )

The Sign of the Dragon
(Born Hammer 1 through Alturiak 30)
Personality: You'll usually find him at the head of things, rather than following behind. He is a pioneer, and demands to be first. An Dragon person is likely to announce "Here I am" to you. Except, by the time the rest of us mere mortals have caught up with him - he's already down the road! They are often thought to be rather self-centered, but they really are not out to hurt other people, they just are more naturally focused on themselves. This can lead to being seemingly oblivious to what is transpiring with other's feelings.
Intelligence: Like most months, you feel smarter than most others although you may find your best laid plans will fail miserably. Did you really think anyone would choose fried stag beetle over Sander's chicken?
Romance: You are a bit narcisistic, actually if loving yourself too much is a crime, then the Purple Dragons are on their way over. If they're on the way over, you may want to put that back in your pants.
Success: Your swordplay will improve greatly due to the number of stag beetle you've killed (see Intelligence).

Lifespan: You will visit the Fuge twice in the month of Ches

The Sign of the Golem
(Born Ches 1 through Greengrass Holiday)
Personality:The Golem is generally trustworthy and loyal. He is "down-to-earth" and is fiercely loyal to his family and friends or master. He can be rather stubborn and set in his ways and fixed in his master's opinions.
Intelligence: You were a born follower and there's no reason to start thinking now. Just pick your leader carefully. The guy who wears a pot helemt 24 hours a day may be a drow.
Romance: You will find yourself in love with a dark and mysterious lady. Unfortunately, she will only want you to shower her with presents of ancient dire bear claws, and the relationship will never move to a deeper physical or intimate stage.
Success: You will be given money in return for ancient dire bear claws and thus have a banner month for income (see Romance).
Lifespan: You will visit the Fuge thrice in the month of Ches

The Sign of the Mage
(Born Mirtul 1 through Flamerule 30)
Personality: The Mage often appears to be a serious individual. Even as children they seem "grown-up". He is responsible, practical, very ambitious and a hard worker. Mages can seem a bit cold to those who don't know him well.
Intelligence: Your great invention- the leash ( pretty much a leather rope to tether animals) will be called the greatest invention to hit Arabel since the bank note, as maniacal people inthe city will no longer have to chase down nearly defenseless things to kill.
Romance: If male your only contact with a person of the opposite sex is Shira (see Success). If female you will still be waiting for that bookish, wizard look to come into style.
Success: Your success will depend greatly on your ability to sell your new invention and that will depend on your ability to sign the eight year old, Shira, to serve as your spokeswoman.
Lifespan: You will visit the Fuge four times in the month of Ches

The Sign of the Spirit
(Born Midsummer Holiday through Higharvestide Holiday)
Personality: The Spirit is often the life of the party as he has an outgoing personality. She/He is often humorous and enthusiastic. Spirits tend to love animals. They like to support the underdog and is fond of philosophical discussions and pursuits. A Spirit has far-reaching thoughts, just like the path of a far-flung arrow.
Intelligence: Your thought on ways to improve the relations between Shar and Mystra fall on deaf ears. Next time don't get your blindness/deafness scrolls mixed in with your silence scrolls.
Romance: If you're a druid, don't let your love of animals go to far. Shapechanging over the next 3 months can be dangerous as we approach spring and the Greengrass holiday, well unless you're up for some serious badger lovin'.
Success: You consider yourself very successful as having never died to a bear attack, like you hear so many talking about. You may want to consider leaving East Arabel sometime next month though.
Lifespan: You will not visit the Fuge in the month of Ches

The Sign of the Rose
(Born Marpenoth 1 through Nightal 30)
Personality: Roses are often homebodies. They are emotional, intuitive and nurturing. Roses like home and hearth. They like good food, and they like to feed their friends and family. Roses also are moody. They can be optimistic one moment, and then in the next they can be absolutely gloomy.
Intelligence:
You finally master the lute only to discover you are to play the flute in the next band performance at the Tired Traveller. Another month at the conservatory will do you some good.
Romance: A bizzare love triangle will develop between you, a halfling and a half-orc. Even more bizzare, you will end up the odd man out.
Success: Two words- "Flaming Sword". Still unclear as to whether you get a flaming sword this month, or die to one.
Lifespan: You will visit the Fugeonce in the month of Ches

A SERVICE OF THE EYES AND EARS OF ARABEL: INFORMATION & COURIER SERVICE OF THE CITY

REAL NEWS
See Game Mechanics Page for details on changes to the play environment

10/25/03: everyone knows, there's been a rumor since before SoU even came out that Arabel would have a wipe. There will be a wipe, and there are a few reasons:

1. We want to clean up the vault. Arabel has been played, since the last wipe, by over 21,000 different accounts. That's a lot of space and I believe that some system lag may actually be getting caused by trying to access player files. While we are also implementing a system to auto-clear unused directories and characters, that comes with its own problems -- specifically, it leaves stale database files around.

2. There have been significant gameplay changes to Arabel over the time. Arabel has become grittier, tougher. While there is a certain whimsy to Arabel that we don't want to lose, we have made it harder to advance; we've closed loopholes, toughened easy quests, and so on. We've modified ATS, and we're completely replacing it before the wipe... we were going to just change the products. But with certain coming HotU features, we have decided to get rid of it completely in favor of a new system. Meanwhile, the treasure you can generally get has changed, and our system has changed with respect to things like True Resurrection, etc. Everyone needs to play by the same rules, and the wipe allows us to deal with a lot of 'grandfathered' things easily.

3. We're going to change things a lot. Arabel has changed incrementally for over a year, tuning things to be fun, challenging, and interesting. But we have queued a large number of changes now. So many, it might be tough to recognize the Arabel that comes next.

That said, in the interests of keeping ourselves on schedule, we've both pushed our date back and decided to set a semi-firm one. We will go "when it's ready", but we figure this way, at least we have something quasi-accountable.

Hordes of the Underdark is scheduled to be released 11-25-03 unofficially. Assuming that HotU goes off as expected, then I expect that Arabel v3 will be our Christmas present to our players, and we will release it 12-25-03.

In the meantime, taking a page from Bioware's book, we will be bringing you some periodic new content, as well as updates on what's going on. Look for a sticky in Server Issues regarding the wipe and what's coming. We think you'll agree that it will be rather exciting. In addition, there will be a major event around the time of the wipe.

Update: we added ourselves as an Amazon affiliate. If everyone orders their HotU through our site, we will make $1500 we can put towards a new server! So PLEASE order your HotU through us through Amazon. It's like making a $1.50 donation to Arabel that costs you nothing. We'll be putting this into a general fund for improved hosting capacity/etc. (See the bootom of the Main Page.)

10/6/03: New DM - Mr. Moloch

10/5/03: The Planar Ally spell now requires a gold donation for the summoned creature (100gp per hit die) that can be reduced with a sucessful CHA check. The clerical "Planar Ally" spell now behaves like the arcane version, meaning the summoned ally needs to be convinced to stay and fight for the caster.

10/1/03: Website Update- getting started- quick links on making a new character

8/21/03: New DM - Ashuram

8/20/03: We have updated to 1.31. You must also to play.

8/20/03: The first stage in ensuring that clerics actually fit the ideals of their deities, functions have been added to the module. You can now see how well your character fits to the god you entered in the deity field by speaking to a NPC. All clerics who think they are not correctly recognized should send me a PM. The gods that are present are the ones listed on our website

8/20/03: Some quests have had new surprises added. Stay on your toes.

The main plot line quests should be considerably smarter about what you can do. They are still persistent, but you should be able to restart an incomplete one if there's a crash, or start the next plot quest if you completed the previous one before a crash.

A number of quests have had their xp or gold values adjusted up or down.

XP rewards have changed. You may find you are getting more or less. We're going to experiment with this for a while.

Note: the DMs now have the ability to lessen or increase the xp scaleback for individual PCs. And we'll use it to reward/penalize people who play their characters well/poorly.

8/4/03: Alchemy ATS added. Ask other alchemists in game to learn more.

8/4/03: Healing Change-There was a widespread belief that cure spells cast with the Healing domain were not empowered. They have been all along.

Cure minor wounds now cures 1d4 instead of 1 hp.

Heal Kits: The DMs have debated this a long time, so I'll preface this by saying that this change is by no means permanent. Our goal is to make clerics more important as healers, and generally make a balanced party stronger and gung-ho front-line clerics and solo madmen weaker. We will be very open to changes as we see this in action. (I will update with exactly how the new heal kits work when I know how they come out.) That said; as of the next reboot, healing kits are replaced. You can still cure poison and disease, and you can still stop bleeding. However, when a healing kit is used on poisoned/diseased people, it will not also cure.

Moreover, when a healing kit is applied to an injured person, it will be against DC 15. They are imbued with 'extra healing' for their next rest, equal to 2*HD (per the PHB rules for 'long term care'), plus an additional amount equal to whatever you beat the DC15 roll by.

Only one kit can be applied per rest. You cannot apply kits to yourself for long term care.

[UPDATE] Kits now do a DC10 check, you can heal yourself again. Armor must be off in order to get at the wounds. Kits are essentially high-powered salves/etc, so it is applied as a regeneration effect, regenerating your Heal check - 10 in HP. The better the kit, the faster the regeneration effect.

7/30/03: Changes to Pick Pocket -
* Pickpocket has a penalty applied to successive attempts, that lasts a minute.
* You can no longer pickpocket from PCs who are under level 4
* You can no longer pickpocket items heavier than 3 lbs
* Items in stacks larger than 1 will only permit you to steal one of that stack

It should also be impossible to mass-pickpocket using an action-queue exploit; apparently Bioware fixed this.

7/20/03: AI is changing. It will be gradual rather than instant, but the first of the changes are in. We won't say what; we'll let that be a fun surprise. That said, we highly recommend you discard your expectations while this process is going on.

7/15/03: No longer will you cower in fear when a DM logs in. A new caring and loving DM, Gurb, is now in town. I'll be glad to solve your problems for good if you only use the right words. Don't worry, come close, it will all be fine and there will be no more pain or worries. Come, come to me...

7/14/03: SoU is now fully on in Arabel. This primarily means you can take and use the new spells, since most other things were okay before. It also means you need SoU to play. I'd recommend getting it; the SoU OC is pretty good. Shorter but better than the original, IMHO. And Arabel will use new content from it.

The following spells have been changed:

* Bigby spells: instead of knockdowns, most implement movement speed decreases.
* True Strike: shorter duration
* Missile Swarm: never does more than 1d6 per missile. Missiles count only once against SR or mantles, and are more evenly distributed.
* Drown is magical, not bludgeoning, damage

7/2/03: You can Delete Yourself - We now have automatic deletion available. Yes, you can now kill off your characters for good and clear your account. Just speak to the beam of light in the fugue.

Note: this is irreversible.

Note: if you have multiple characters with the exact same name, please note that this will destroy all of them. (Only one was probably playable anyhow)

Note: at least for a limited time, I will be providing the ability to commit suicide on the emote wand within 24 hours. If you simply want to houseclean, please wait until the suicide option is on the emote wand, so you don't disturb other players or the DMs by getting killed attacking guards/commoners/other players.

7/2/03:Module Changes

1) Some quests (and soon all) will be persistent. Most if not all will be repeatable no more often than 1x in 24 hours (real time).

(2) True Res will now cost more when used more. No one lives forever.

(3) ATS skills were converted to persistence. Some people have lost their tradeskills -- ~35 of you. If you did, please respond to the 'server issues' tradeskills post with your character name and account name. There was only a 5 minute or so window this happened. If you're one of those people, post, and I'll check your ATS skill ratings from the night before and restore you when you're online. The good news is, this change (now fixed) will prevent any future loss.

7/2/03: Prestige classes will be DM approved and the consequences for taking one without explicit DM approval will be dire

7/2/03: Update to 1.30 - It's possible there are bugs. Do not exploit them, because we will delete you. Just report them.

You should now be able to play with 1.30 NWN, or with SoU.

For those with SoU, feats and skills are selectable, and you may select them. Appraise does nothing right now, so don't bother taking points in it.

Certain classes MAY see SoU spells. DO NOT SELECT THEM. We have blocked the ability to CAST THEM, and so if, for example, you took them as a sorceror, they would not show up in your spellbook/radial menu, and you will just lose that slot until you level up.

We _will_ be updating to SoU at a later date, at which time those spells will become usable, after we make some changes for balance.

Please post bugs or concerns under Server Issues or Bug Reports.

6/10/03: New DM: Tephritidae

5/31/03: New DM: Santista join the ranks of DMs.

4/22/03: New DM: In the ongoing effort to add a 24/7 DM-instakill service, I have been added to the list of people you will learn to hate. Be prepared to die a lot of messy deaths and see the Lady's House the hard way a lot more now - especially those who so far have tried to escape our wrath by hiding in some whimsical place in Europe! - Agrafes

4/7/03: See Game Mechanics FAQ for more updates- especially changes to TENSOR'S TRANFORMATION

3/19/03: New DM

Hi there! I'm Meiun, the newest Arabel DM (and probably the first to have a gnomish avatar). My goal is to keep y'all supplied with more plots, stories and intrigue than you can shake a gnomish halberd at. I look forward to toy^D^D^D playing with all of you. Happy scheming!

3/18/03: Policy Change

In an effort to stop certain practices the DMs feel take away from the quality of the server, our policy on metagaming, powergaming, and other exploitation has changed. What will occur in the event of a violation is at the DMs discretion, and will vary based on the offense, but often a death without the possibility of true resurrection (or, possibly, any resurrection) is typically considered minimal punishment. Obviously, our most severe course of action is banning.

Other actions which are absolutely prohibited include: passing equipment from one of your characters to another, in any manner, including using an intermediary; giving people equipment for any ooc reason, including ooc relationships or interactions with a player's "other characters"; killing NPCs or other actions performed without an IC reason to do so; logging after stealing or attacking/killing another character without giving sufficient time for actions in response (if you don't have time to deal with the consequences, don't commit the actions). Finally, server issues occasionally cause characters to be duplicated into the wrong server vault. If this happens do not log in; simply report it on the forum under server issues. Logging in using someone else's character is an exploit and will be dealt with as such.

This list is not all inclusive. Please use your best judgement. Remember that the spirit of the server is such that things which are not conducive to a roleplaying environment are generally unwelcome.

Exploitation of bugs to gain gold, experience, duplicate items, or such, will almost certainly result in a permanent ban.

3/17/03: Update/Reminders Website: Sharess Infromation - Campaign Map - Calendar/Holidays - God Chart

3/14/03: New DM

To punish you all for clamoring so much for additional DMs, I have been added. Now you're all going to pay.

Just kidding, of course. I'm joining the DM team in order to supplement Rocc's amazing scripting skills, so we can bring you quests bigger, better, and faster than ever before. I'm also looking forward to being able to interact with the great playerbase of roleplayers Arabel has. As a note, although I'm mithrandir99 here, someone has that on gamespy, so I'm mithrandir999 there. This is also just to confuse all of you further.

Thanks for your attention, and I look forward to playing with you all.

3/8/03: Changes

1. Until you reach 4th level, you will be stuck on sparring mode. After you reach 4th, you can switch to the normal sparring/subdual/full damage modes.

2. Until you are 4th level, you will receive a hefty penalty to pickpocket. After this level, you can pick pocket at normal skill level.

3. Darkness spell was changed.

2/24/03 NEW DM
Just thought I'd introduce myself. I am Bork, the new Euro-DM. For the next couple of weeks, I'll be cleaning house in the European times so don't be surprised, if there are a "few" bootings, warnings and bannings in the near future.

That said, I've been a PnP DM for over 15 years and am looking forward to RP in with some of the Good RPers in Arabel...

Bork

2/17/03 Familiars
Small natural animals (birds and bats) will now be allowed to roam the city, provided that they cause no trouble to the citizens. As mentioned earlier, it's unlikely that a normal person would know it is a familiar and not just an ordinary animal. Goodly fairies are allowed as well.

Demonic creatures and mid to large sized animals (boars, wolves, etc.) will not be allowed to walk the city streets.

2/14/03 Raise Dead/Resurrect Has Changed

2/12/03 Due to some server problems,
1) If you logged in as a character approximately midnight central time, you will be rolled back to early morning 2/11.
2) If you created a new character after midnight CST, you were deleted.
